<image:title>Peace Billboards - Betty Nobue Kano - Japan</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "'Seeing Peace' is the bringing together of the torn and ripped apart with symbols of peace, the origami crane. Just before 'Desert Storm, the First Gulf War,' I painted 'Promise' with a large cowrie shell symbolizing the currency, fecundity and wealth of civilization with the promise that should Iraq, the cradle of civilization, be attacked by the U.S., I would also attack my painting to show what destruction does. I couldn't bring myself to attack my painting in 1992. However in 2003 when the U.S. again attacked Iraq, there was nothing else I could do to express my despair over the loss of civilization to humanity, except to assault my own painting. As an act of peace I have stitched the peace symbol onto the brutalized painting, 'Promise,' using origami cranes that have been made by my 95-year old mother, Elsie Ogata." BIO: Born in Sendai Japan, Betty Nobue Kano is a painter, curator and lecturere. Adter earning her MFA in painting from U.C. Berkeley, she has exhibited her work in nearly 200 regional, national, and international gallery and museum exhibitions. Billboard was located at Masonic & Fulton.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BIO Clinton Fein was born in South Africa. He is an artist, writer, and activist noted for his company, Appollomedia's controversial website and its Supreme Court victory against US Attorney General Janet Reno, regarding the constitutionality of the Communications Decency Act of 1997. Billboard was located at Broadway & Montgomery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Igor Yusev - Ukraine</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "Yusev presents a gang of smiling vestal sisters, but radically subverts our cliched view of them by transforming them into an armed force. Questioning our understanding of peace and violence. Yusev's painting depicts the canonesses seemingly standing gaurd over a giant cat that stares, transfixed and cross-eyed at the wasp that sits on his noes. Is it perhaps a metaphor for imminent danger? An analogy for the co-existence of species? Or perhaps a comment upon the often bizarre and senseless formation of alliances, and the unstable balances of power that defines peace?" BIO: Igor Yusev is a Ukrainian painter. He was born i Odessa, Ukraine in 1970. Yusev's paintings draw on the rich heritage of the "Odessa School," exploiting painterly kitsch and bright hues. But more in line with Ukrainian New Wave, his works betray a very contemporary sense of self-effacing irony. In his world disembodied ladies legs squat on stilettos, giraffes play with airplanes, skeleton cats stride underneath cars and Ronald McDonald is cuffed and carted away. Billboard was located at 3rd St & 19th St.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Jamyong Singye - Tibet</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "This painting shows eyes of compassion that can see throughout space and time. Golden rays of sacred light spread across the universe, and our own earth's body rests in the protection of a lotus flower, a symbol of purity. The lotus holds the globe safely above the many dark clouds of pollutions, and the fires of global warming from resource depletion. It shows the moon on the left, depicting the feminine force, and the sun on the right, depicting the masculine force. Together they symbolize balance. At the top corners are two rainbow clouds symbolizing impermanence. At the bottom corners are clusters of three wish-fulfilling jewels." BIO: Jamyong Singye was born in the Kahm region of Eastern Tibet. His family escaped to India when he was a young child, where at the age of six, he was placed into a Tibetan monestary in Sonada, near Darjeeling, India. After many years of training, Singye is recognized as a Master Thangka painter and teacher. Billboard was located at Mission & 6th St.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Rafael Trelles - Puerto Rico</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "My vision of peace is based in the mutual respect of sovereignty between nations. For more than sixty years, the US Navy used the small, Puerto Rican island municipality of Vieques as a bombing range, firing tons of explosives on its beaches. In 2003 the Navy retreated from the island, forced out by a massive campaign of non-violent civil disobedience by the people that suffer the consequences of the contamination. The images are symbolic representation of the hope of these people for the healing of their physical and emotional health and to restore the ecological balance and natural beauty of their land." BIO: Rafael Trelles was born on April 27, 1957 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He started studying painting at the age of eleven, under the guidance of Juio Yort (Spanish painter from Cataluña). For the next eleven years he continued his education with other renowned Puerto Rican and Spanish painters. Trelles was granted by "Fondo Nacional para el Financiamiento del Quehacer Cultural de Puerto Rico" with the prize "Premio al Mérito" and has had important art exhibitions in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, United States, France and Germany. Billboard was located at Valencia & Duboce Ave.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "In meditation, Buddhists refer to the 'space between,' the gap that occurs in the middle when one is breathing in and breathing out. When one inhales and then exhales there is a moment of stillness. A pause. An opportunity! And then it continues again and again. Well, for me, the moment of stillness, the pause, the opportunity, this empty space is what peace 'looks like.' It is there for my imagination to enter. It is a wide open window, finally. Many many many different images of what 'it' looks like..." BIO: Long time artist/activist/curator/educator Richard Kamler has been making issue-driven art since 1976, when he made his first major installation, "Out of Holocaust," a full size reconstructed section of one of the barracks from the Auschwitz Death Camp. Since then, his public installations, sound pieces, actions, events, drawings, sculptures, and public presentations have dealt with a range of various social and envrionmental issues and have been exhibited nationally and internationally. He is the artist behind this project. Billboard was located at Judah & 9th Ave.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Taraneh Hemami - Iran</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "This is from Three Stages of A Rose by Sohrab Sepehri 'Perhaps our mission is not to study the rose, but to float in its mysteries forever.' Looking for serenity, I turned to a rose; a flame, burning for love; it became a drop of blood blooming." BIO: Iranian born Taraneh Hemami's multi-disciplinary works explore the complex cultural politics of exile through personal and community projects and installations. Exploring themes of displacement, preservation, and representation, her paintings, sculptures, and installations investigate the in-between spaces: between art, artifact, and architecture; between two and three-dimensional space; between technology and hand crafted objects. Billboard was located at Divisadero & O'Farrell.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Tonel - Cuba</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "Peace is based in equality, and that the opposite of peace - violence and war - feed off inequality. I see peace as conscious choice of rational human beings who pursue a fair, just, and balanced way of living and who relate to each other (within the family, the community, the society, and the world at large) with deep respect and honesty. Equality for me means equal (and affordable to everyone) access to health care, education, clean water, housing, food, employment, leisure, art and culture. Equality is also the unrestricted freedom of people who never use their freedom to harm others or to limit other's freedom" BIO: Antonio Eligio Fernández, known as Tonel, graduated with a degree in art history from the University of Havana in 1982 and is an artist, writer, land curator. He has exhibited in the Havana and Sao Paulo Biennials and at several other institutions in Cube and abroad. His work is included in many public and private collections, among them: Museo Nacoinal de Bellas Artes, Cuba; Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Germany; Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia, Columbia; and the University Art Museum at Arizona State University, USA. Billboard was located at Cesar Chavez & Evans.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Uzi Broshi - Israel</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "Peace within is when, through all layers of being, one arrives at a place of quiet. So is true peace between peoples and nations. According to my personal experience in Israel and my understanding of the Israel-Arab experience, a deep ethnic, religious, cultural and national Intolerance is tearing apart and devastating the possible place of peace for the people of the region. If I (we, you, they), even for a brief moment, am truly able to tolerate intolerance, to bring the two into one being, with no conflict, then the flight can be diverted into a place of Seeing and Being Peace. Can I?" BIO: Uzi Broshi was born in Israel and lived in a kibbutz there until the age of 30. He received his BFA in film-making from SF State University, and his MFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in film-making and performance. Billboard was located at 22nd Ave & Irving.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peace Billboards - Victor Cartagena - El Salvador</image:title>
<image:caption>ARTIST STATEMENT: "I grew up in times of war, under the 'military boot' and the cassock, under dictatorship that left behind the painful aftertaste of death and disappearance. I have been a witness to wars, invasions and revolutionary movements, cold wars, curfews, walls built and walls demolished. I immigrated, running away from a wold embroiled in an unending war, but war continues to color my everyday life. My work life explores the socio-political landscape, including an examinations of consumer culture, homelessness, material waste, capital punishment, exile, identity, immigration, and the use of power. I am especially interested in expressing where the personal journey intersects with political, global and universal realities and beliefs." BIO: Salvadoran-born Victor Cartagena has been making art in the Bay Area since the late 80s, working in printmaking, painting, drawing, mixed media, installation and set-design. He has exhibited his work at Galeria de la Raza, New Langton Arts, Ampersand International Arts, Intersection for the Arts, Southern Exposure and the Oakland Museum of Californai, among others. Billboard was located at Mission & 7th St.</image:caption>
